Join us for the latest discussion from our US series, sponsored by Katten. As the global economy emerges from COVID, there will be opportunities for cash rich investors to pick up high quality assets in the US at discounted valuations. This session will discuss the tax, legal, finance and wealth management considerations for Family Office investors and UHNW clients investing in the US in operating businesses and real estate.

We will be discussing live on Zoom with an expert panel featuring:

  • Matthew Sperry, Partner at Katten in New York and Chicago - Matthew is an international Private Client Attorney whose practice is devoted to making it easier for global ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families to access the United States, whether it be for investment, spending time in the US or utilizing US trust and other structures to advance personal goals or otherwise.

Matthew believes in using state-of-the-art trust, corporate, family office, fund and other US legal concepts to develop simple but effective wealth succession and family governance structures that minimize global tax and reporting burdens, foster privacy, protect personal wealth and advance family harmony, leaving his clients to focus on enjoying their hard earned wealth. He is recognized by Chambers High Net Worth Guide as a leading individual and is a member of Legal Week's Private Client Global Elite. His client base includes individuals and families in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Canada.

  • Lincoln S Ellis - Senior Investment Strategist, Northern Trust, Chicago. Lincoln is the Senior Investment Strategist and Chief Investment Officer of Global Family Office and Private Investment Office Services. In this capacity, Lincoln works with Chief Investment Officers, investment staff and their families on portfolio construction, asset allocation, manager selection and program implementation. Lincoln is also tasked with managing investment programs for some of the firm's most important relationships.

He is a member of the firm's Investment Policy Committee and the Institutional Group's Multi-Manager Solutions - Investment Oversight Committee.

  • Brooks Giles - Partner and Deputy General Counsel, Katten, Chicago. Brooks helps equity investors and business owners buy and sell operating businesses. Many of his transactions involve the purchase of private companies by private equity firms. He also represents sellers in such deals, which typically range in value from $25 million to $500 million. For all his clients, he finds the right structure for the transaction, negotiates the terms and offers guidance on corporate governance and general corporate matters.

Brooks has successfully closed a large number of middle-market M&A deals, using structures that include stock purchases, asset sales, taxable and tax-free mergers and leveraged recapitalizations. He knows the importance of closing on time, on budget and at market terms. More importantly, he knows how to achieve those goals. In every deal he touches, he looks to use his accumulated knowledge, together with specialist input, to resolve issues before they become crises.
