Global Family Business in South Africa: Investment, Structures, and Sector Trends

Following on from our discussion on Global Wealth Planning for South African families, this session will focus on the latest trends in the Family Business and Family Office environment.  

The session will open with a discussion on the global macro conditions for investment and considerations for South African business owners.  We will focus on some key sectors of the economy, particularly looking at the Fintech sector.  The discussion will also cover the latest ideas on how to structure business interests for international trade and investment.  Finally, we will explore the Family Office sector in South Africa and pull out the latest trends.          

We are delighted to be joined by the following speakers:

Henk Potts - Director of Investment Strategy, Barclays Private Bank, London. Henk joined Barclays Bank in 1998 as a graduate and worked as a Stock Market Analyst for Barclays Stockbrokers, focusing on UK equities, before rising to the position of global Equity Strategist in 2001. In 2009 he was appointed Director of Global Research for Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, where he works as part of a team formulating and communicating investment strategy to internal and external clients.

In his current role, Henk analyses a wide variety of asset classes, including equities, currencies and commodities, as well as ascertaining and explaining the effects of macro-economic changes on financial markets. Based in London, he works in the UK and across a wide range of other jurisdictions including Monaco, Geneva, Cyprus, Bermuda and throughout the Middle East and Africa, where he interacts with private banking and intermediary clients.

Henk is very well known in the media and regularly appears on Sky News, BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC, Channel 4, CNN and Fox News. In addition to television appearances, Henk has numerous radio commitments as an in-house stock market expert, with regular slots on Talksport, LBC, Riviera Radio (Monaco) and World Radio Switzerland. He also writes regular columns for national UK newspapers and personal finance magazines.

Amol Prabhu - Country CEO: South Africa & Market Head: Africa, Barclays Private Bank, Johannesburg.  Amol is Accountable Executive for all Barclays’ businesses in Africa, having covered the continent for over a decade and specifically leads the Private Bank as Africa Market Head. Amol is also the Country CEO for South Africa. Amol has worked across both Investment and Private Banking at Barclays while being based in Dubai, Hong Kong, London and presently Johannesburg. 

Amol holds a Masters in Law and International Finance (with first class honours) from the University of Cambridge.

Effie Datson - Global Head of Family Office, Barclays Private Bank, London.  Effie Datson joined Barclays in June 2020 as Global Head of Family Office.

She is responsible for building, managing and growing our Global Family Office (GFO) proposition and product set, and to deliver the One Barclays mandate. Working in partnership with the business, product heads and COO team she brings focus and capability to the coverage effort of the largest global clients across the Private Bank.

Effie has more than 25 years' experience in financial services and a wealth of expertise in product and business development for complex financial solutions across alternatives, derivatives and structured products and investment expertise in multi-hedge fund portfolios. She joined Barclays from UBP where she was Head of Hedge Funds. Prior to joining UBP, Effie held senior roles at banks including Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank, where she was responsible for distribution of liquid alternatives and sustainable investing. 

Effie holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB magna cum laude from Harvard College. She is founder and former board member and chair of 100 Women in Finance (formerly, 100 Women in Hedge Funds) in EMEA.

Quentin Mulet-Marquis - Head of FIG for Middle East & Africa, Barclays, Dubai.  Quentin has previously worked in Amsterdam and London and has been based in Dubai since 2021.  Before joining the FIG team, Quentin worked for 4 years in Barclays’ Corporate Development team, where he was responsible for executing M&A transactions on behalf of the group. 

Quentin holds a Master in Accountancy and Finance from Heriot Watt University (Scotland), with Honours of the First Class, and received the Watt Club medal for greatest distinction in the Accountancy and Finance degree and the Bill Johnston Memorial Prize for the best performance in the School of Management.

In 2019, Quentin received a Recognition Award from Barclays CEO Jes Staley owing to “Outstanding contribution to EMEA Financial Institutions clients”.

Johan Odendaal - Managing Director, Corpag Services, South Africa.  Johan is a legal and tax professional with 10+ years’ experience and specialist knowledge in international corporate law, taxation and regulatory matters.  He is currently the Managing Director of Corpag South Africa assisting South African entrepreneurs and businesses with global expansions and individuals with international wealth planning and structuring.
