An Interview with Sam Eves

What do you do for Abacus Trust Group?

I work alongside clients to establish and manage a wide range of complex, multi-jurisdictional trust and corporate structures. Our clients are sophisticated and discerning and it is my job to make sure our service levels consistently meet their expectations. Abacus works hard to create personal, pro-active relationships with our directors taking the lead and we are supported by a well-qualified and experienced service team that I oversee. I also work very closely with other professional consultants including tax advisers, lawyers and investment managers.

What do you love most about your role?

I love the variety. My client base is international and I enjoy being able to meet with them to understand the needs of their businesses and their families. Sometimes the focus is on preservation of wealth for inheritance purposes, including the holding of assets, wealth management and investment performance while for others the priority is their day-to-day business activities and administrative needs. We may have initially connected with a client to assist with trust and corporate structuring but as our relationship with successive generations has matured our services evolve.

What are your client’s priorities?

Receiving a first-class service. Without exception our clients appreciate the benefits of Abacus being independently owned as we have no affiliation to any particular bank or adviser. They also respect our core values and integrity. In recent years generational wealth transfer, succession and estate planning, inheritance tax planning, the growth in alternative investment assets, ESG and philanthropy have also been high on the agenda of our clients.

What do you consider your greatest achievements?

Professionally I am thrilled to be doing something I love and getting paid for it. I am fortunate as Abacus has been very supportive as my career has progressed and I have balanced the demands of a young family. It is incredibly rewarding when your hard work, loyalty and dedication is recognised. As an employer, it is so important for the future of any business to nuture the talent within a team, supporting both professional and personal development.

Why has your company joined PCD?

It’s the right environment for us to meet like-minded industry colleagues from different geographical locations. I have got to know some really remarkable people, heard many different perspectives and made some productive business connections which has resulted in an array interesting new work. I have attended dinners in Dubai and my colleagues have taken part in events in London and the Isle of Man, we all agree they have been very worthwhile.

On a weekend, I am most likely found…

With my family. When I am not running a full concierge service for my two young children and husband I love the countryside on the Isle of Man, walking our dog and taking any opportunity to listen to a new podcasts. I have lived on the Isle of Man for 13 years and I can’t think of anywhere better to live, work and raise a family. Our jobs are often pressured but being able to leave work and be on the beach paddle boarding and building sandcastles or cycling through the plantations with the kids within half-an-hour is pretty unique.
