We will discuss the latest trends on the establishment of new structures, the purpose, and the motivation for these vehicles. We will look at the latest trends from the UK, Channels Islands, and Switzerland from a tax, legal and fiduciary perspective.

Richard Joynt - Director & Head of Family Office, Highvern, Jersey. Richard qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1997 and holds an MBA from Warwick University. As well as having expertise in financial accounting and strategic financial planning, Richard has devoted the last 20 years of his career to the Family Office sector. He was the Director of a prominent Single Family Office from 2002-2012 and led the Multi-Family Office division of a prominent international fiduciary services firm from 2013 to 2021, dealing with Ultra High Net Worth individuals and their families from many jurisdictions including Europe, the US, the UAE and Russia.
He has specific expertise in private equity, luxury assets, cryptocurrencies and philanthropy. At Highvern, Richard is responsible for managing some of the more complex client relationships, often with innovative structures. He is frequently asked to write articles for leading publications and regularly speaks at international conferences on specific issues relating to Family Offices.
Stephen Griffiths - Partner, Saranac Partners, London. Steve joined Saranac Partners in August 2017. A Chartered Tax Advisor by background, he has a career in tax/financial services spanning 30 years including time at PwC, UBS, Credit Suisse, Coutts and latterly JP Morgan.
Steve studied Geology at Imperial College and has a Masters from Royal Holloway College. He also holds the DipPFS qualification.
Catherine Grum - Partner and Head of Family Office Services - BDO, London. Catherine advises families and family offices around family office establishment, family governance and philanthropy. She believes that when families understand their values and the purpose of their wealth, they can build on much stronger foundations and, by aligning their structures and activities with this, create sustainable long-term solutions.
She has worked with family offices for over 15 years, gaining a unique perspective from the combination of roles she has held. This has included heading a private office and sitting on the board of three international trust companies (Salamanca Group) and coordinating wealth structuring with investment management (Barclays Wealth). This all built on her training as a private client lawyer at Allen & Overy.
Recognised as a thought-leader in the family office industry, Catherine has previously been named as one of EPrivate Client's 50 Most Influential and is one of Family Capital's Top 100 Family Influencers 2020. She has written, spoken and been interviewed on topics ranging from next generation planning to impact and sustainable investing.
Catherine has an MA in Jurisprudence from Oxford University, is a Trust & Estates Practitioner (STEP) and Certificated Family Business Adviser.
Carolyn Steppler - Head of Wealth Planning - Credit Suisse AG, Zurich. Carolyn joined Credit Suisse AG as Head of UK Wealth Planning in May 2017. Since October 2020, in addition to her role for the UK market, Carolyn has been Head of Wealth Planning for Europe.
Prior to joining Credit Suisse AG, Carolyn was (from 2007) a private client tax Partner in the London office of Ernst & Young LLP UK.
When in practice, Carolyn specialised in advising UK resident non-domiciled clients with a focus on UHNWIs and international family offices. She also participated in discussions with HMRC and HM Treasury on their proposals to introduce the new tax regime for non-domiciliaries in both 2008 and 2017. Carolyn is a co-author of Tolley's Statutory Residence Test, the second edition of which was published in November 2017. This book analyses the UK's statutory rules determining tax residence.
In her UK market role at Credit Suisse AG, Carolyn is the Wealth Planning expert for CS AG's UK clients. She helps clients on estate and succession planning, investment structures (personal, family and private funds), philanthropy, family business structures, family governance, establishing a family office and relocation to and from the UK.
As head of the European Wealth Planning team, Carolyn is responsible for Europe-wide wealth planning initiatives for CS AG clients with multi-jurisdictional interests and activities.
Carolyn holds a MA (classics) and a D Phil (ancient Greek political history) from St Hugh's College, Oxford.
