An Interview with David Conway

What do you do for Buzzacott?

I am an Associate Director in the Private Client team, working with all types of clients to provide them with personal tax advice and compliance services. Within that, I have a particular focus on non-UK domiciled individuals (including offshore trust and company structures) and Global Mobility issues.

What do you love most about your role?

I really like building relationships with my clients, who all have a personal stake in the advice I give. They see me as their trusted advisor and an integral part of their overall financial planning. I also enjoy the mental challenge that comes with some of the more complex offshore matters that I deal with.

How has your business adapted in light of COVID-19?

It certainly hasn't been the easiest of year for anyone. As with all professionals, we had to get used to video calling technologies very quickly and doing everything online, but we have been able to quickly adapt with our clients to communicating online. Some of the challenges around Global Mobility have changed as clients seek tax advice for the change in circumstances they find themselves in, which could involve being in countries they weren't intending to be in. As a team, we have worked hard to ensure that we support each other and have regular team catch-ups and online socials. And, of course, pandemic or no pandemic, people still need to get their Tax Returns completed!

What has been your greatest achievement? Personal or professional.

Oh gosh, without wishing to sound too gushing, I like to think of life of a series of mini-achievements!

Why did you join PCD?

I actually went to my first PCD dinner around 5 or 6 years ago and have enjoyed seeing how the events have blossomed from the small beginnings then to the much larger affairs than they had become by 2019. But I could already see then the potential that they had back then for providing great opportunities to network with like-minded professionals. That encouraged me to avail myself of opportunities to continue supporting PCD where I could and has led to the much greater involvement that I have now in my role with Buzzacott, whether it is helping to make content for the magazine or participating in webinars this year.

Have you attended a PCD webinar? What did you think?

I have attended a number of webinars throughout the course of the year. They are a great way of keeping in touch with the thoughts of other experts in the topic area and the trends that are happening. They are also another good way of networking with other professionals, in the absence of face-to-face events.

On a weekend, I am most likely found...

Well, before lockdown, I was most likely to be found DJing in a German bar, playing cheesy sing-a-long songs and 90s Eurodance. During this year, as with everyone, I'm probably most likely found at home!!
