UK & EU Series: Trends in ESG - Mobilising Private Capital to tackle Global Challenges

The ways in which Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors have been addressed or incorporated into investments has evolved and attracted greater attention in recent years. 

As we emerge from the COVID-19 lockdown, it is an opportune time to gauge the market’s perspective on influences and contributing factors to ESG and impact investing. 

In this webinar we will discuss the results of a survey Berenberg conducted in 2018 on ‘Understanding the SDGs in sustainable investing’ with the addition of views on specific and selected topics that have emerged more prominently since, such as Impact Measurement, ESG Products, COVID-19, COP26 and B Corps. 

The survey was completed this year by 112 participants across the investment community. These participants are largely based in the UK and Germany and are interested in ESG.

Richard Brass - Head of Wealth and Asset Management UK, Berenberg, London.  Richard is the Head of Wealth and Asset Management UK having joined Berenberg in June 2011 from Schroders Private Banking. He founded Impact Ventures UK in 2012, and was appointed Chairman of the Arts Impact Fund in 2017. He was awarded the Impact Investor of the year in 2020 by the Digital Agenda Awards. 

Additional pro-bono work as Director of Montpelier Foundation, Guy Family Foundation and co-founder of Regenerate Trust and is a member of the advisory councils of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Big Society Capital.  He is a chartered accountant (ACA) and holds a BSc in Mathematics from Sussex University and the PCIAM (Distinction).

Bernd Deeken - Portfolio Manager Equities / ESG Specialist, Berenberg, Hamburg.  Bernd has been at Berenberg since April 2011. He is a portfolio manager within the discretionary equity team with responsibility for the ESG strategy and selection of sustainable investments for foundations, church organisations and private clients. 

Previously he worked in portfolio management with a focus on managing multi asset mandates. Following studies at the Berufsakademie (university of cooperative education) in Hannover, he also holds a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from the universities of Zurich and Aberdeen. He gained the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation and is a CFA charterholder.

Grant Wilson - Chief Investment Officer, Asset Risk Consultants, Guernsey.  Grant joined ARC in 2015 as Chief Investment Officer. He has worked in International Finance for more than thirty years, initially as an investment manager and executive director of a number of fund management companies, including Martin Currie Investment Management Limited and Gartmore Investment Trust Management Limited. For the last ten years Grant has worked as an Investment Consultant based in Guernsey. Grant has served as a Trustee or Director on a number of boards of charities, private and public companies.

Grant is an Associate of The CFA Society of the UK (ASIP), a Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (MCSI) and an Associate of the Chartered Governance Institute (ACG). He has a degree in Business Administration from Strathclyde University.

Melanie Griffiths - Head of Client Solutions, Private Wealth, Equiom, London.  Melanie started her career at Deloitte on a graduate program before joining J.P. Morgan & Chase where she built a career in  Private Wealth over 15 years,  advising Private Clients on both sides of their balance sheet and engaging with clients & their advisors  on wider wealth considerations such as estate planning and philanthropy. As Head of Client Solutions for Private Wealth at Equiom she acts as a strategic liaison between  families and their professional advisors, working at the intersection of Private Client Lawyers, Investment Managers and other professional advisors.  She brings a particular focus to matters the next generation of beneficiaries are particularly engaged with, such as digital assets and ESG. 

Melanie is a native French speaker, she holds the Financial Planning Certificate (FPC- I II, III), the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and the Private Client Investment Advice & Management (PCIAM) qualifications.  She holds a first class BSc Honours degree from Manchester School of Management and an MSc in Technology Management from Manchester Business School. In her free time she is a Trustee and Director of the Consumer Association, better known as "Which?". She is an avid amateur photographer and mother of 3 children.
